An extended weekend of shape note singing school for
all ages and experience levels in a beautiful setting
in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Cost: Full Participant - $180, includes 3 nights
lodging and meals (beginning with dinner on Thurs. and
ends with breakfast on Sun.), and classes. Rooms are
double occupancy.
Commuter - $30/day for classes only - meals are
additional costs.

Classes will include Beginning Rudiments, Advanced
Rudiments, Children's Class, Leading a Song, Keying a
Song, Organizing a Singing, History of Shape Note
Singing, Odes & Anthems, and Parts Practice. There
will be group singings each evening. All classes and
singings will be based on the seven shape notes music
of The Christian Harmony (Carolina and Alabama
editions) and The New Harp of Columbia. Books will be
available for loan and sale.

There were 30 singers, 8 of them new ones, at the monthly Epworth Singing at the Laurel Theater in Knoxville on Sunday, Jan. 13th. It was a good turn out, and sounded really enthusiastic and LOUD!
On Tuesday, Jan. 15th from 4:30 to 6PM at the Music Road Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, we had 28 singers and hundreds in the audience. We sang in the HARP Room, and the program was a part of Wilderness Wildlife Week. (Were we invited because we represent some kind of wildlife??) David Sarten, moderator, took at least a dozen questions and requests for tunes, from an interested and attentive group.

Minutes of the Larry Olszewski Memorial singing, held at the East
Tennessee History Center, December first, 2007. (The singing will be
moved to the third Saturday in January 17th, 2009, at the Laurel Theater; so that
there will be no Larry O. Memorial singing in 2008. There were around 60 present, 37 of them singers.

Calvin Idol, the principal of Laurel High School, was present as we
passed the hat for a collection for Larry Olszewski's favorite

Singers from each of these traditions told a bit about the book they used and led the group in a several lessons. In addition the Boston Camerata sang as a small group while teaching their "New England style" with composers such as Billings and Ingalls.

This most enjoyable day was sponsored by MARCO, the University of Tennessee medieval studies program.

The current titles available are;

Never Part Again: New Harp of Columbia Singing from the William H. Headrick Chapel (2001)
A field recording of the September 23, 2001 Headrick's Chapel singing isavailable as a two-disc set! This is the longest recording (contains 55 lessons) to date of a singing from the New Harp of Columbia, a seven-shape tunebook published in 1867, and used almost exclusively in the region around Knoxville, TN.

The Year of Jubilee is Come!: Old Harp Singing from the 38th Epworth Jubilee (2002)

Please note This recording is a reworking of theNever Part Again CD.Never Part Again contains more songs, but has only minimal notes and information about the tradition. This disc is a much more complete introduction to the tradition. Rise My Soul has a selection of 31 lessons from the September 23, 2001 Headrick's Chapel singing, with a new look, and expanded notes about the history of Old Harp singing, Headrick's Chapel and the 31 songs.

Weep Not for Me: An Old Harp Memorial for Larry Olszewski (2006)
This one-disc recording contains 26 lessons from a singing held in conjunction with the memorial service for noted Old Harp Singer, Larry E. Olszewski, held at the Laurel Theater in Knoxville, TN on Sunday, December 18, 2005. Also included are two short excerpts from Larry’s comments to the class at the 2005 Headrick’s Chapel Singing, and his solo singing of Parting Friends, sung as a farewell to the community.

Smithsonian Folkways has the following CD available Old Harp Singing - Old Harp Singers of Eastern Tennessee Folkways Records - FW02356 1951. "The seventeen singers featured on this album hail from the valleys of eastern Tennessee around Sevierville and Maryville, where they sing songs from the famous shape note collection The Harp of Columbia, which was first published in 1848. Extensive liner notes include several reproductions of hymns from The Harp." The CD may be ordered at Smithsonian Folkways where samples for listening are also available.


Information on the Singing School CD published in cooperation with Jubilee Community Arts will be added later.


The Digital Library of Appalachia at Warren Wilson College has a audio tape of Old Harp Singing from 1979. "The Knoxville Sacred Harp Singers sing hymns with a group of high school students from Paideia school in Atlanta. The group is led by John Sundale." The location most likely is the Laurel Theater.
