Here are your Jan. 2010 Old Harp Shape Note Singings for East Tennessee. All are invited, tunebooks are provided! Website is www.oldharp.org.

As a part of Wilderness Wildlife Week at the Music Row Inn, Pigeon Forge, we have been invited again this year to sing and have a question and answer session. This is ably led by David Sarten, and the group in the past has numbered over one hundred, and they ask a lot of questions, and seem to truly enjoy our singing (imagine that!) It was Hugh McGraw that said, "I'd travel 300 miles to sing in a shape note singing, but I wouldn't walk across the street to listen to one!" Anyway, the date is Sunday, Jan. 10th from 2:30 to 4 PM. It's in the Violin Room, Music Row Inn, 314 Henderson Chapel Road, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863, 800-429-7700. It's easy to find, right off the Parkway on the right as you are coming from Knoxville or Sevierville, TN, near Ruby Tuesdays. We would usually sing at the Laurel Theater that day for our monthly second Sunday singing in Knoxville, but we will cancel it that day and resume Feb. 14th.

Here are your Old Harp East Tennessee Shape Note Singings for September, 2009, with one exception that follows. Our website, which has recently been updated by Chris Stoddart, at www.oldharp.org has our annual newsletter and calendar of singings.

Here is the change. The singing at Piedmont Baptist Church will be this SATURDAY, not Sunday as previously announced.
Saturday, August 29th, 7 PM, Piedmont Baptist Church‎ Singing 1226 W. Dumplin Valley Road, Dandridge, TN 37725-5612 Phone of the church is (865) 397-2125. David Sarten for more info, 865-389-3100. Directions follow.

To reach the church from Knoxville, travel east on I-40 to exit 412, Deep Springs. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Deep Springs Road, go over the interstate and travel about 1 to 1 1/2 miles and turn right onto West Dumplin Valley Road. You will cross state hwy. 25/70 (two lane highway) at a stop sign intersection after a little more than a mile on West Dumplin Valley Road. (be very cautious here as there is limited sight distance to the west) Continue on West Dumplin Valley after crossing 25/70 to a 4-way stop intersection. (odd shaped intersection with an old store almost in the intersection on the left?) Bear right, staying on West Dumplin Valley Road and you will see the church on the left around 1/4 mile or so, marked with a large sign at the road.

The Singing School on Sat. Mar. 21st, 2009, was a big success with 30 attending. Kathleen Mavournin and Tina Becker helped teach an all day class in rudiments, which about 20 attended , and then the rest of the class, about ten, attended four different classes in the following: History of Shape Note Singing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, taught by Robin Goddard and David Sarten, Composition by Randy Webber, Challenging Songs by Steve Stone, and Leading a Song by Chaz Barber. The next day for the Annual Epworth dinner and singing, we had over 45 attending, with some students from Roane State choral group in Harriman, TN, who are singing two songs from our tunebook (Creation and Winter) for an upcoming concert. Odis and Phyllis Abbott with their family attended even after his fall (fractured femur). Robert Kelley, Phd., from Greenwood, SC, taught us Rose of Sharon for an upcoming wedding (Chaz's daughter). There were singers from NC, also, Mary and Chris. And Leslie from Elizabethton, TN. Oh, Randy Webber from Kentucky who taught Composition and had us demonstrate a song the class wrote. After about two miles, turn left over the river and cross the other two lanes onto Kings Branch Rd. to the end. Turn right on Boogertown Rd, church is 100 yards on the left. EVENTS ON THE HORIZON IN MARCH:
As a part of the annual Jubilee Festival, held at the Laurel Theater in
Knoxville, TN, Sat. March 21st from 9:30 am to 4 pm, we'll have a New Harp
of Columbia Singing School to teach new singers how to sing shape notes, and
seasoned singers how to sing the more challenging tunes, and sharpen
skills. The day will offer a morning session, 9:30 am till noon, and an
afternoon session, 1:30 pm till 4 pm, with concurrent classes, and you are
welcome to join the morning, the afternoon, or both sessions. There will be
a nominal fee for materials. We are asking that experienced singers attend,
to sit by the novices to afford a faster learning experience. More info as
plans are firmed up.
Also, the next day, on Sunday, March 22nd, same place, will be the Annual
Epworth Singing and Dinner on the Grounds from 10 am to 3 pm. An hour
earlier, and longer than last year.

There were 26 singers for the Dollywood singing on Oct. 19th. Bruce Wheeler was our able moderator, happily keeping the thing moving and interesting.

We had 45 singers at the Maryville College singing on Sunday, Tom Taylor moderated, and told of it's long interesting history. Afterwards, we went to Nancy Olsen's for dessert fare prepared by both Nancy, and Nan Taylor. Among our special visitors, was Nancy, a daughter of Gid Fryer.

We host Sean McCollough's Music of Appalachia Class from UT, Thursday, Sept. 11th, potluck at 6:30 PM, singing following, until 9 PM. The students come prepared to sing from the New Harp of Columbia, and observe and participate in our tradition.

Many of the students don't have a way to cook, and contribute to the potluck, so we always ask the singers to bring extra food, so we will have plenty. I guess there will be about 25 students.

It will be held at the Laurel Theater, 16th and Laurel Ave. in the Fort Sanders neighborhood of Knoxville. The acoustics are just wonderful for the harmonies presented! When there are non-singers, they like the balcony. Gid Fryer is avaliable to open the place, at 6 PM, and if you can help him bring the many tables upstairs, and set up chairs, call him at 865-524-3136. We will eat and sing upstairs. Others are always welcome to help Virginia and Robin, to open the dishes, and clean up after. It wouldn't hurt to bring an extra card table, if needed, and just leave it in your car. If you would bring a bag of ice, drinks, card table, or water, let Virginia know, 865-524-1462.

We collect $5 a head, round trip, so a sculpture of Al in bronze, at his request, can be erected in his honor, at the Laurel Theater when he dies.

Dear Hearts and Loud Singers,

We had a high energy singing at Shannondale Retirement Center in Maryville on Friday, once we found the room. What a big place. The residents clapped after almost every lesson, and Judy Gast gave an impromptu history lesson.

This Sunday, June 22nd is the Beech Grove Primitive Baptist Church Singing, Pigeon Forge, potluck at noon, singing afterwards till 3 or 4. If you would like to ride there, in a van that would meet at Lowe's in South Knoxville, at the corner of Chapman Hwy and John Sevier, at 10:30 am, please respond to this email. Other wise, here are some directions: from Pigeon Forge heading toward Gatlinburg on Rt. #441, take the first right onto Caney Creek Rd. There is a sign for the church, which is two miles or so up on the left. Sharee Green will be the moderator, who is working as a school teacher and living in Oklahoma these days.

On Saturday, July 5th is Kirby and Cora Sweatt's Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Celebration, and we are all invited to attend and stay for a singing afterward. It's in the Baker Fellowship Hall at the First Baptist Church, 305 Ingleside Avenue, Athens, TN. It begins at 2 PM, and at 4 PM there will be a brief Old Harp and Sacred Harp Singing.

At the next light, Montvale, turn left.

Travel through the next light, Montvale Station Rd, with Victory Bapist Church on the right. I would guess it is 1/2 mi. from that light to Shannondale on the right. If you slightly pay attention to the right side of the road, you won't miss it. You will pass subdivisions and streets.

Turn right into Shannondale. Go in between the first rectangular, large buildings. (don't count the houses that you pass.) and park to enter the building on your left. There will be someone inside to direct you.

the grounds. People were exceedingly well fed (and often also well
lubricated) by the time we got around to the singing.

Headrick Chapel, Sunday September 27th, 2009. The day was bright and
clear, after many days of heavy rain. (Thank you to the tent riggers,
who got the tent up just before the downpour the day before.) We sang
64 songs (including duplicates), probably a record, with a number of
songs we'd never sung before. The number of people present was rather
small, but we had more strong and proficient singers than we've heard
in many years - the treble section was probably the strongest I've
ever sung in.

On April 4th, 2009, thirty-three Old Harp singers gathered to
celebrate John Wright Dunn's arrival at the great singing square in
the heavens. 88 years old, a World War II Army veteran, and graduate
of Tennessee Wesleyan College, John Wright Dunn was one of the
dedicated singers who revived and preserved Old Harp singing in Blount
County. The Rev. Ken Abbott, an old friend of John's, officiated at
the funeral home

Paul Clabo led 87T Hightower, 139 Meditation (which John so often
led), and at the end 95 Parting Hand verses 1,2,9,10,11,12.

We sang at least six tunes we had never sung before, or sung only rarely.
[1] "Davisson's Retirement" was published by Ananias Davisson in 1820,
text by Joseph Grigg 1765 (according to Marion Hatchett's Companion to
the NHoC).
[2] 157 Creation was very ably sung by the Roane State Community
College concert choir, directed by Brenda Luggie.
[3] Laurel is a new composition by the composition class of the
singing school led by Randy Weber at the Laurel Theater, the day
before the singing. Because Christian Harmony (Carolina) 179 is titled
"Laurell", and J.L. White Sacred Harp (1911, recently republished) 507
is titled "Laurel Hill", I suggest we amend this title to "Laurel
Arbor", in reference to singing in "brush arbors" as described by
Robin Goddard in her account of singing in the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park.
[4] Russia appears in four-note notation in Sacred Harp 107; tune by
Daniel Read 1786, text by Isaac Watts 1707. The version from which we
sang was set up in Swan seven-note shapes by Karen Willard. Randy
Weber notes that she has raised the sixth notes ("Dorian") which
apparently does not appear in any published edition.
[5] Pleyel's Hymn (second) - (rimes with "dial") appears, tune and
text, in Sacred Harp 143 as "Pleyel's Hymn (first)".
[6] 101 Winter was very ably sung by the Roane State Community College
concert choir, directed by Brenda Luggie.
A singing school was held at the Laurel Theater on Saturday, March
21st, 2009, the day before the singing. Kathleen Mavournin and Tina
Becker led the school together; Kathleen had led several singing
schools previously, while it was Tina's first. About twenty people
attended the "upstairs session" - roughly half of them complete
beginners - while "downstairs" there were four advanced classes. Steve
Stone led four difficult tunes, 127 The Rock, 46 Concord, 74 Never
Part Again, and 178B Invitation. David Sarten talked about the history
of Old Harp singing, and its importance in maintaining local heritage.
Robin Goddard gave an extensively researched presentation on harp
singing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Randy Weber led a
class on composition, which led to the class actually harmonizing a
tune "Laurel" (which as I noted above had probably better be called
"Laurel Arbor"). And Chaz Barber led a class on leading.
Robin Goddard noted that four tune books are recorded as having been
used in the Park: the Harp/New Harp of Columbia, Caldwell's Union
Harmony, Knoxville Harmony, and Tennessee Harmony (as well as
Christian Harmony, which was used in the North Carolina part of the
Park around Cataloochee).
I found that the Hoskins rare book library at the University of
Tennessee has the Union Harmony, Knoxville Harmony, and Tennessee
Harmony.

The singing was quite an extraordinary one, with many visiting singers
from Indiana, Kentucky, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama - in
addition to the many singers from Tennessee!
Bruce Wheeler once again was the moderator. Tina Becker noted: Many
thanks to Ann Strange and Eddie Mash for organizing it, and to
Virginia Douglas and Robin Goddard for organizing the Dinner On The
Grounds.
Before dinner Robin Goddard counted 65 singers and 17
observers/visitors. After dinner she counted 78 singers and 32
visitors who were also singing at times. So the count is approximately
70-80 singers and 20-30 observers during the day.

There were 30 singers, 8 of them new ones, at the monthly Epworth Singing at the Laurel Theater in Knoxville on Sunday, Jan. 13th. It was a good turn out, and sounded really enthusiastic and LOUD!

On Tuesday, Jan. 15th from 4:30 to 6PM at the Music Road Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, we had 28 singers and hundreds in the audience. We sang in the HARP Room, and the program was a part of Wilderness Wildlife Week. (Were we invited because we represent some kind of wildlife??) David Sarten, moderator, took at least a dozen questions and requests for tunes, from an interested and attentive group.

Tennessee History Center, December first, 2007. (The singing will be

Epworth Singing School 2009

On March 21, 2009 a one day singing school was organized by Kathleen Mavournin and Tina Becker, over 30 people attended the school. Kathleen and Tina led classes in the fundamentals. Other classes and leaders included "Challenging Songs" - Steve Stone, "Shape Note History in East Tennessee" - Robin Goddard and Dave Sarten, "Elements of Composition" - Randy Webber, and "Leading" - Chaz Barber.

The next day for the Annual Epworth dinner and singing, we had over 45 attending, with some students from Roane State choral group in Harriman, TN, who are singing two songs from our tunebook for an upcoming concert. Odis and Phyllis Abbott with their family attended even after his fall. Robert Kelley, Phd., from Greenwood, SC, taught us Rose of Sharon for an upcoming wedding. There were singers from NC, also, Mary and Chris. And Leslie from Elizabethton, TN. Randy Webber from Kentucky who taught Composition and had us demonstrate a song the class wrote.

The Friends Of The New Harp Of Columbia , a non profit organization recognized by the IRS under 501 (c)(3), fosters the tradition of singing from the New Harp Of Columbia through publication of a schedule of singings, publication of a newsletter, teaching through singing schools, communication through a list-serve, loans and sales of singing books and CDs, maintenance of a resource and reference collection, and presentations. Boston Camerata "Singing School"

Here are a few pictures from the singing organized by the Boston Camerta in the Fall of 2007. The gathering was held in Knoxville and titled "Singing School". Thelessons came from many shape note traditions including Sacred Harp, Christian Harmony, and New Harp of Columbia. Singers from each of these traditions told a bit about the book they used and led the group in a several lessons. In addition the Boston Camerata sang as a small group while teaching their "New England style" with composers such as Billings and Ingalls.

This most enjoyable day was sponsored by MARCO, the University of Tennessee medieval studies program.

Never Part Again: New Harp of Columbia Singing from the William H. Headrick Chapel (2001)
A field recording of the September 23, 2001 Headrick's Chapel singing isavailable as a two-disc set! This is the longest recording (contains 55 lessons) to date of a singing from the New Harp of Columbia, a seven-shape tunebook published in 1867, and used almost exclusively in the region around Knoxville, TN.

The Year of Jubilee is Come!: Old Harp Singing from the 38th Epworth Jubilee (2002)
This field recording contains 24 lessons from the 38th annual Epworth Jubilee singing from the New Harp of Columbia, held March 25, 2002 at the Laurel Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Rise My Soul: Old Harp Singing From Wears Valley (2005)

Please note This recording is a reworking of theNever Part Again CD.Never Part Again contains more songs, but has only minimal notes and information about the tradition. This disc is a much more complete introduction to the tradition. Rise My Soul has a selection of 31 lessons from the September 23, 2001 Headrick's Chapel singing, with a new look, and expanded notes about the history of Old Harp singing, Headrick's Chapel and the 31 songs.

Weep Not for Me: An Old Harp Memorial for Larry Olszewski (2006)
This one-disc recording contains 26 lessons from a singing held in conjunction with the memorial service for noted Old Harp Singer, Larry E. Olszewski, held at the Laurel Theater in Knoxville, TN on Sunday, December 18, 2005. Also included are two short excerpts from Larry’s comments to the class at the 2005 Headrick’s Chapel Singing, and his solo singing of Parting Friends, sung as a farewell to the community.

Smithsonian Folkways has the following CD available Old Harp Singing - Old Harp Singers of Eastern Tennessee Folkways Records - FW02356 1951. "The seventeen singers featured on this album hail from the valleys of eastern Tennessee around Sevierville and Maryville, where they sing songs from the famous shape note collection The Harp of Columbia, which was first published in 1848. Extensive liner notes include several reproductions of hymns from The Harp." The CD may be ordered at Smithsonian Folkways where samples for listening are also available.

Information on the Singing School CD published in cooperation with Jubilee Community Arts will be added later.

The Digital Library of Appalachia at Warren Wilson College has a audio tape of Old Harp Singing from 1979. "The Knoxville Sacred Harp Singers sing hymns with a group of high school students from Paideia school in Atlanta. The group is led by John Sundale." The location most likely is the Laurel Theater. After opening the page click on the Icon for a"lesson" and then on the next page click on the link "Access the item." which appears under the title of the "lesson" in red.

"Singing The Old Harp", Volume 2 Story 17of The Heartland Series by Bill Landry "Depicts old harp singers who sing without accompaniment. They sing the notes first and then sing the words." The episode presents scenes of singing from the home of Helen Hutchinson and at the Laurel Theater. There are many familiar faces onthis video. Horn wrote Sing To Me Of Heaven; A Study of Folk and Early American Materials in Three Old Harp Books, a study of folk and early American materials in three old harp books including The New Harp Of Columbia. The book examines early American hymns, anthems, and fuguing pieces and folk hymns.Though long out of print copies may often be found at such booksellers as Amazon and ABE .

Marion J. Hatchett wrote Companion To The New harp Of Columbia, a commentary on every text, tune, author, and composer represented in M. L.
